We have exceeded 350 parts per million (ppm) of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in our atmosphere, and bad things are happening to the planet.   Scientists have determined that below 350 ppm the bad things will reverse. All of humanity should be focusing on what we individually and collectively can do to get that number down to 350 and below.

Food entails a certain carbon foot print. How big is yours? What are you doing to reduce it?

  • Eat less, drink more water.
  • Reusable bags when shopping.
  • Choose local more often than exotic.
  • Choose fresh rather than processed.  Packaging leaves a footprint.

Can you think of more? Please comment and add to the list. Also please spread the 350 word through the grass roots. You are not likely to hear the “powers that be” volunteer anything about it, because that could bring up uncomfortable policy questions for them.

Buy in bulk and reuse bulk containers.

Compost your scraps (and/or feed them to the dog.)

Avoid products with fillers (soy, corn, etc.) because they often come from those massive farms who don’t prioritize environmental effects of their practices (and what they call “organic” is questionable).

    Make your own rice/soy milk.

Wow. Great suggestions! I never thought of Make your own rice/soy milk! Rice milk is not so hard to make; however I question its nutritional value. Soy milk is a lot of work. Since you suggest making it, you must be figuring that people can find a source of good non GMO soy. I’d be interested in where you get that. And as for why soy milk is bad, you must be referring to those aseptic containers that rice/soy milk typically come in. Our co-op has a fledgling program to recycle those, but at the moment it’s not yet user friendly. Thanks so much for the excellent food for thought.
